today's entry is to show you that I'm smart :) I basically wanted to share some knowledge I have because I know a lot of people are going through some stuff regarding love and relationships, so here goes...
the word love is used very broadly but I'm going to school you real quick on the four types of love so when I say I love you, you will know what kind I'm directing at you... and when you say it you will know what you really mean... Just for background there are four types of love philia, storge, eros, and Agape
Philia is what I have for most of you. It is a human love that is very selfish in nature. This is the love of friendship, best friends, and the fellowship of being with those people you enjoy. It is not always reliable and that comes from mans desire to be accepted and loved, it is selfish in nature and expects reward in loving. It's also based on ours and other's perceptions and expectations. Unfortunately, we probably all know of a friendship which was severed because of time, distance, harsh words, or how someone interpreted another's actions.
Next is Storge, I have this for a few of you, its a maternal type of love. It's the love of a parent to a child and a child to the parent or family affection between family members. This is the love you have because you are of the same family. You know that Blood is thicker than water love.
Now Eros is probably what most people mean when they giggle and smile and say to the world, "I'm in love." This type of love covers everything from queasy stomachs and warm fuzzies to passion. This is more of a physical type of love, yet it can also be nonphysical in nature. It too, is very self serving, and expects reward for loving. It is the love that is most often abused and misused, and confused for "love" when in fact, it is not "love" at all, but lust. This is the love that Hollywood has made billions on, tons of books and articles have been written about, and poets lament about.
Finally is that ultimate love. Agape Love is God's Love. It is Perfect, Total, Complete, Selfless, Undying, Unconditional, Eternal, and it's for everyone. It entails the decision to proactively seek someone's well-being. Since it is not a reaction nor just a responsive feeling to how I've been treated, agape is capable of acting in a hostile environment where there are no warm fuzzy feelings. Agape has the power to rise above its environment, it can also empower passion and friendship. For example, when a when a mother chooses to speak and act toward her child with agape, this creates the loving environment in which eros and philia can thrive.
If I have all things, and that includes Philios, Storge, and Eros, but I don't have Agape, I have nothing. I am nothing.
Agape Love is the Glue that Eternally Bonds human love together.
It is a love that is freely given by the Lover, and it expects nothing in return.
In relationships when you wonder why they turn sour, why the newness wears off, and why they would all eventually die. The answer basically is ...
You had all three of the human loves...but never experienced Agape Love...
