New Heights

Today's entry is not comprised of all of my own words but those of a woman who I respect and admire a lot. I am in the process of reading her book Open Wide the Freedom Gates and this passage that she wrote reminds me of why I made one of the commitments that I did in my life...

Looking back on my life in Delta Sigma Theta brings elation and a sense of accomplishment. To belong to an organization like Delta signifies that you are truly your sister's keeper. Your sister is not only the one who pledged with you or "made" you. She is the woman who cannot adequately feed her children because of insufficient income. She is the woman in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas trying to eke out a living for herself and her family. She is all over the world. For as long as I live, pride and sisterhood will sustain my concern wherever women are striving for equality and justice. That is the legacy that Delta Sigma Theta left for me.

Soror Dorothy Irene Height
10th National President of Delta Sigma theta Sorority Inc.

If you want to read about a powerful woman who moved in silence but made awesome strides not just for my people but for women as well go get this book. This 93 year old woman is a walking history book she has so much to share and so much richness and power within. She is the type of woman that stirs up emotion just being in the same room as her, because you know what she did to create change in history. Before I even became a Delta or was really up on what Delta was all about I knew about Soror Height through another group that I am in, National Council of Negro Women. I was at an event they held when I was in the 10th grade and she spoke and I was in awe. She was often times the only woman in the Civil rights Movement and the only woman and person of color dealing with other socioeconomical issues. I know you are wondering why I am talking about her but she is a woman that moves in silent and does not promote herself and people really need to know what and who she is and stands for.
