Sex in DCity

Last night since I couldn't fall asleep I pulled out my DVD's and had a mini "Sex and the City" marathon. Looking at the characters and how they are all so different yet a wonderful set of friends made me think about how with each set of friends I have I am one of each of the characters on the show.

With my linesisters there are four of us that roll together hard and each one of us are really like a character off the show. Eight (I'm referring to us by our numbers) is like Charlotte. She's always the one in the stable type of relationship and she's the only one in the bunch that is getting married any time soon and is kind of is prudish. Thirteen is more of a Miranda smart and practical in most of the things she does. Then there leaves twelve and myself (seven). We sort of swap roles but usually she is usually Carrie kind of ever changing in her ways and relationships and somehow I got to be Samantha who I think exudes confidence and sex appeal and is also high-powered PR exec (which I will be soon lol). When we go out it's really like an episode from the show. Eight is kind of low key at the table or on the sidelines relaxing. Thirteen is scoping out the place and may take an occasional risk in mingling. Twelve and I are all over the place. I always have my martini/champagne in hand, as does she and we are working the room lol. It's kind of funny that when I'm with them all of this Samanthaness comes out.

Now with my H.S. friends here all of a sudden I'm Carrie. I'm the fashionista shoe addict that loves a good martini and is the "commitment phobe" out of the bunch. Always in relationships that have a "story" and am always somewhere on my laptop analyzing something and typing "my thoughts" lol. My bestfriend is Samantha all the way, straight up sex pot that loves immediate gratification and excitement. Our other friend is Miranda all she does is go to work come home deal with her fiance and occasionally we can drag her out of her very normal life. Our other friend is straight Charlotte she is in search of Mr. Perfect she has the wedding planned the location set the bridesmaids dresses picked out and even knows the menu for dinner... now all she needs is a boyfriend--> fiance--> husband.

With my little clique who are affectionately known as the princesses I am definitely Charlotte. They say I'm the prissy one and the one that dreams of the white picket fence and the 3.5 kids and the dog. I'm the one that actually looks forward to having a family (one day far in the distance) and love the classics and the arts and galleries and then to top it off I took all my electives in museum development in grad school.

With some of my friends that I grew up with from childhood I'm Miranda all the way. I'm the one that chose a "practical" way of living. I went to college and then grad school and soon I'll be starting a doctoral program and am a bit cynical but pragmatic. The ones I roll close with are M who is very much Carrie and a freelance writer, J who is Samantha and a dance teacher that teaches strip aerobics lol and K who is Charlotte because she's the hopeless romantic that followed her fiance to Korea with no job just to be near him. So as you can see I am the less "spontaneous" one with them and am hesitant to give up material needs, career ambitions or responsibilities for a passionate moment that might not turn out the way I'd hope.

It's pretty interesting how one person can be so many different characters yet be the same. All the different elements make me who I am. Together they make the bold and liberated yet curious and perceptive women who is conventionally ambitious and stable and at times intuitive, profound and sometimes naïve. I think it's a great combination.
