Empty promises

I was just with a little girl at my church who was crying because she had been waiting all day for her dad to pick her up. Actually she had been waiting since Sunday he was supposed to come get her but called and said something came up and he couldn't come but would the next day and now it's two days later.

This made me think why do we make promises to people we know we can't keep? The little girls mom said she hasn't seen her dad in four months and she figured he wasn't going show up but his promises were sounding so convincing even she was believing him this time.

A lot of times we promise people that we are going to do something but we either knew from the start it wasn't going to happen or somewhere along the line you decided to break your promise but failed to tell the other party. A wonderful example of that is my ex. Whenever things got rocky in our relationship here was this elaborate promise. The first one was a vacation to the British West Indies (which would have supposedly happened had I not dumped him lol) then when he was hanging on by a string he made a promise that when I graduated from school that he would give me $10,000 dollars. Did I believe that, no Did I even ask for it, no. But he made that promise that he knew he wouldn't and couldn't keep to try to hold on to a relationship that was dying if not already dead.

We will be quick to make a promise when things aren't going our way or when we are losing so that we can hold on to something. I know people that think a promise of a trip, money, or any material thing is going to salvage something that is breaking apart (although many times it works though). The worst empty promises are emotional ones. Someone promises their love, faithfulness, compassion and respect and they knew from the start that they couldn't share that with you or changed their mind but still left you to linger.

I know yall are like where is this coming from, well around this time of year we often make many empty promises to ourselves. I'm going to church more, I'm going to work out, I'm going to love myself, I'm going to heal, I"m going to get rid of baggage, I'm going to foster relationships... and we quit before we even start.

Let's not start off the new year making empty promises to others or ourselves. If we want things to improve then we have to follow through.
