Step outside your realm
I'm not what people would classify as an "outdoor" person. I'm more of a mall, museum, chill with my friends and family type person. Outdoors to me is working in the garden, going to the beach, boating on the lake/bay, having a cookout (you get my drift). So what made me decide to have an outdoorsy type of day today I true don't know.
My original plans this weekend were to be in NY but that got postponed. Then after that I decided I was going to go to a vineyard in Western Maryland for a wine tour and tasting. But that wasn't anything exciting or new to me.
So I decided to dress warm and comfortable, made sure I had water and my camera and I got in my car and just drove. I've done this before and I usually end up somewhere like an outlet mall lol. Today I ended up "communing with nature."
Like I said I'm not an outdoor person. But when I started driving I thought about how I kept saying I wanted to go hiking on Roosevelt Island in Virginia. I didn't have any hiking gear on me but I did have my camera and I knew they had a walking trail. So I headed there first and then spent the rest of my day capturing some of the most beautiful, serene and breath taking places in the DC area.
Most people don't know I'm a photography enthusiast (probably stems from my dad having a side gig as a photographer and me being on his coat tails). It's something I love to do. But with the hectic life I've been leading I haven't touched my real camera (not the digital one or reg 35mm) in like a a year.
Being outside taking pictures and absorbing my surroundings allowed me to remember that with all the hustle and bustle that occurs in everyday life sometimes we need to step outside of our everyday realm. Take a moment and do something that is different from your set routine. Moments like these allow you to reflect and remember the blessings you have and just how magnificent God and life is.
While I was at the different places I encountered so many people that I would have never met and had some great interactions. I walked through one trail with a family and while at the falls this guy saw me taking pics and insisted he take one of me because "everyone needs a visual memory."
It's interesting that it took a day doing things out of the ordinary, such as standing on a rock looking at the beauty of a waterfall, to realize how wonderful life is and how the simplest things can evoke happiness and bring pleasure.
So make sure you make time to step outside your realm and appreciate life and everything around you.
I went to the darkroom and developed the pictures I took they some are posted on NaturalButterflyy
