Happy "Anti-Valentines" Day

Most people that know me know that I am not a fan of Valentines Day. No it's not because I am some single bitter bytch but simply because I don't really fancy a holiday where people feel pressured to express their love/lust for others. Don't get me wrong I'll still take the cards and flowers (as long as they aren't roses, no need to buy me roses when I'm not a fan and the florist has marked up the cost 200%... lilies and orchids work just lovely) and I've been known to write a sonnet or two or a letter to express my feelings towards my significant other that day but that was because I knew that I loved and appreciated that person and they felt that way about me every other day and the flowers and cards and letters were apart of our normal routine.

So many guys (and some women) feel pressured by that holiday. Like that is the deadline to say I love you, that is the day I must propose and make her feel special (along with the 100,000 other women getting proposed to that day), that day I must go to Godiva, Ghirardelli or CVS (to get the trusty Whitman Sampler in the heart shaped box) to prove that she is special to me and I love her. When that is not true (at least not to me). Sure it's great to get all those things, hell everyone knows how I love a gift but to me it is so much more heartfelt if I get a card and some flowers (no chocolate), and dinner at Two Quails or Mie N Yu on March 14th as opposed to February.

I rarely remember things that I did on Valentines day with my boyfriends but I do remember the occasions when I got a letter in the mail or when I'd get a card just because or flowers and a note saying I love you for no reason in particular. That's why I usually spend the "commercial" holiday with people that already know I love them and don't need a Hallmark reminder. This year I spent my pre-valentines day weekend doing a love sex and romance panel friday at church and having an absolutely fabulous time at a bowling party/lock and key party with some of my fraternity brothers (when I say an absolutely fabulous time I mean I had a good ass time lol). Last year I was in Manhattan (the weekend of) with my linesisters having dinner at the Sharkbar drinking large martini's and laughing and having fun, previous years I've gone on "dates" with my mom, other times I've been away at school so I've sent my niece and nephews heart shaped cookies and cards or gone on "dates" with my single girlfriends.

OnValentines day make sure it's a day where you are loving you. Sometimes we so easily love others but forget to love ourselves. So we can use the holiday as a reminder to love ME. So go out and treat yourself to something that makes you feel good (for me that usually comes in the form of a good meal, massages, blue tiffany boxes, shoes and handbags... just don't go into debt making yourself feel good).

If no one has told you I love you today... don't expect to hear it from me lol although I do love some of yall...I can't make blanket statements so some of the crazies will read and be like Christen told me she loves me lol

But seriously if no one has said I love you or bought you some chocolates (who needs the empty calories anyway) or some flowers (that are going to die anyway) or a 1.5 carat Asscher cut diamond ring set in a platinum and diamond band (lol I have to send subliminal messages occasionally) who cares... all that matters is that you love you.

I would like to send a Happy 104th Birthday to my great uncle who is having his party today while I'm at work. I would also like to thank Chevonne for sending the cutest note and valentine in the mail (I played the little game on the card lol)... I am always appreciative when friends do little things to make my day and put a smile on my face :) (did you get the black alumni newsletter about CBT8 ?) I'd also like to thank everyone for the positive feedback (whether in comments, email, IM, etc) on the "My Black Family" series (which will return in a few days).

Thanks,
The Management .
