BLOOD SHORTAGE EMERGENCY – INVENTORIES FALL INTO TOTAL STATE OF DEPLETION
July 13, 2005: Inventory of O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative blood has fallen to a state of total and complete depletion, causing the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region to declare a state of emergency. This shortage is effective on both local and national levels, straining the ability of the national system to shift blood products to different parts of the country as needed. Consequently, hospital orders are not currently being met, increasing the likeliness that blood will not be available for every patient in need. Blood donors are needed NOW. Appointments are available by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Platelet donors can schedule appointments by calling 1-800-272-2123.
“Because national inventories of blood are depleted, local communities feel an even greater impact, and must truly depend on their own people to give blood so that patient needs in each hospital can be met,” said Leo DeBandi, Senior Director of Production Planning and Inventory Management for the Biomedical Services Division of the American Red Cross. “Right now, the situation is very serious and blood donors are needed immediately.”
Appointments are available at all American Red Cross blood Donor Centers and blood drives by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. The GC & P Region would like to thank those members of the community who have already responded to pleas for donations, and asks those who have not already responded to please do so immediately so that blood is available for every trauma victim, cancer patient, premature baby, burn victim and surgery patient in need.
someone asked me why the inventory is so low... basically it's because it's summer. people go on vacation, are traveling etc and don't give like they normally do. also there are a lot more boating, bike and holiday related accidents. so if you can help please do I'm not just saying this because I work there but it's coming from a person that has given and from a person who has seen loved ones lives saved because of peoples giving.
**off the soapbox now**
